Tales are abound of a race of horned folk from beyond the Mistwake Sea; some believe they hail from Vulniras, others believe their home lies beyond the planar veil, many believe they have no home. All we know for sure is their name: the Hafera, and their visual cohesion with dragon beastkin… though the imperial dragons and the draconic beastkin are adamant that the Hafera have nothing to do with their lineage.
The Hafera are a curious race, standing as the latest race to be discovered on Pearalos. Hailing from beyond the Mistwake Sea - the generally accepted term for the northern seas of Pearalos as they are blanketed in unending mists - if the tales are to be believed, the Hafera possess a variety of very curious traits and are very reminiscent of the dragon beastkin, yet have a large number of distinguishing features and are not draconic in nature.
At present, very little is known of the Hafera, and what is known comes from the very few, limited interactions with the one or two Hafera that have been encountered, but their existence has prompted renewed interest in studying and potentially overcoming the barrier to further exploration that is the Mistwake Sea.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Despite many people believing the Hafera to be a draconic race, they actually more closely resemble the elves, being possessed of the same general build and frame as elves, but where they differ is in their scaled features; all hafera lack elven ears, instead replacing them with a pair of hollow horns where their ears would be. These are not to be confused with the horns that the dragon folk have, as those horns are just bone, whereas hafera horns are hollow, replete with neurons and nerves that allow the hafera to hear using them, which also makes these horns far more sensitive to sudden shocks.
Beyond the horns, all hafera also possess a scaled tail, though the specific design of their tail can heavily vary from family tree to family tree - as their tail shape (along with their horn shape) is a genetic matter. Hafera use this tail primarily as a counterweight for their horns and bodily scales, but it isn't prehensile so it serves no further use. Finally, all hafera possess patches of scales across their body; typically, these manifest on their hips and neck, as well as their cheeks and forehead, but they can also appear on their upper and lower arms and legs. All of these scaled elements - their scales, horns and tail - can appear in a variety of colours, though ebony black and ivory white are the most common two permutations.
Biological Traits
Hafera possess an interesting slew of biological traits that seem to be drawn from a variety of other elf types, and some of their own unique traits too. They possess a similar - yet focused - variant of orc and sun elf weapon expertise, which is focused heavily on their racial weapons (the katana, tanto, wakizashi and naginata) that the System enforces and provides, and they also possess excellent magical talent akin to that of the high elves, though not quite as potent.
Most interesting, however, are their completely unique traits, which revolve around their natural biology; the hafera have a naturally warmer internal body temperature than other races, which has a slew of interesting effects; they naturally run a higher internal ambient temperature, which makes them far more adept at dealing with cold environments, but requires them to dress with less covering clothes for warmer ambient temperatures so that they can more easily shed their heat - and this indeed tends to result in the race preferring to show skin (even in the cold, since it doesn't bother them to do so) to better manage their internal heat.
It also means that they definitely struggle more with even temperate locations, which might imply that the hafera developed in a colder environment.
Ecology & Habitats
While it isn't known for certain, it appears that the Hafera are most adapted to cold environments - indeed, colder than anything in the charted areas of Pearalos - and that they also appear to struggle in warmer environments. Beyond that, however, little can be gleaned from the very few examples of hafera that have been interacted with.
Additional Information
Origins & Distribution
The origin of the hafera is a topic of much debate, and nobody is sure where they come from. Some say Vulniras, - which may hold some credit - while others say they are from a planar realm or just outright from the sea of stars, and yet more suggest that they may be from somewhere else on Pearalos that has just not been discovered yet. The truth will likely take time to uncover, and the very few hafera that have been met are surprisingly cagey about the matter of their origins for whatever reason. There aren't any permanent hafera settlements in the charted lands of Pearalos, either, with the few isolated travellers having all but vanished.
Average Intellect
From the limited interactions, the hafera have proven to be quite intelligent, certainly reminiscent of the moon and high elves' impressive intellect, though it cannot be known how intelligent they truly are as a race yet, as the sample size is too small. Still, those who are investigating them are anticipating a remarkably intelligent race to be what they uncover.
Perception & Sensory Capabilities
The sensor capabilities of the hafera are truly one of their most remarkable features, and their hollow horns play a massive role in that; they have a very keen sense of smell and their eyesight is of high quality too, but their horns are extraordinarily sensitive to a wide variety of sensory stimuli; sounds are the obvious one, with the hafera being able to hear whispering from several dozen feet away, but their horns can also sense the use of magic, detect tremors and other inaudible sounds, and much more. It's perhaps this intensive suite of capabilities that has resulted in their horns being so sensitive and easily overwhelmed.
